Veneers

What are veneers?

Veneers are made either out of porcelain or a material called composite. They’re placed over the front of your teeth to cover a stain, gap, or chip. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of veneers.

Porcelain veneers are strong, look natural, and can last for up to 10-20 years. Also, they don’t stain easily.

Composite veneers are made from the same tooth-colored resin that is used to make fillings. Usually, less tooth enamel needs to be removed for composite veneers and they’re also less expensive than porcelain and can sometimes be placed in only one visit. Composite veneers are not as strong as porcelain veneers, but they can also be more easily repaired or replaced.

How are veneers placed?

Dr. Zachwieja removes a small amount of tooth enamel (about one-half millimeter) from the front of your teeth. She then takes impressions of your mouth in order to shape the veneers.

If you’re getting porcelain veneers, your impressions are sent to the laboratory to be created. You may have temporary veneers placed while this happens. Once your veneers are ready, Dr. Zachwieja removes the temporary veneers and places the permanent ones on your teeth.

For composite veneers, you may only need one appointment. After Dr. Zachwieja prepares your teeth (the tooth enamel is polished down), she may be able to shape and place veneers at that time.

For both types of veneers, Dr. Zachwieja checks to make sure they feel comfortable once they’re put on, and if necessary trims or shapes them. You may need to come in for a follow-up visit to make sure your gums are healthy and the veneers are placed correctly.

Will my veneers look natural?

Dr. Zachwieja takes an impression of your gums and teeth to create a tooth (or teeth) that fits in with your natural teeth. She also examines many shades to select the color that is closest to your other teeth. Your veneers match as closely as possible with your existing teeth.

How should I care for my veneers?

You should brush and floss your veneers like you would your normal teeth and use a nonabrasive toothpaste. Try to limit foods that cause stains, such as tea and coffee.
